Somewhere around 9 months, the pincer grip arrives and everything changes. Your baby wants to grab it, test it, and find out what happens when they drop it. That's not naughtiness, it's the skill they're practising. Cause and effect is one of the biggest cognitive leaps of the first year, and your high chair tray is where it happens.

What's actually happening at this stage
Babies at 9 to 12 months are sitting confidently, showing real interest in family meals, and starting to grasp objects with thumb and forefinger instead of a whole-fist grab. Hand-eye coordination is sharpening fast. Many will attempt to hold a spoon and try to scoop, though it's mostly dip-and-push rather than a controlled scoop at this stage, real accuracy tends to arrive between 11 and 18 months. Straw drinking often becomes independent in this window too, usually somewhere between 9 and 15 months.
